Better Understanding Our Animal Equals

Tip of the Week
Snails aren’t just for eating algae! Freshwater snails make wonderful pets as additions to many aquariums.  But remember, most snails do not thrive on algae and will need their diet supplemented with other goodies!  More info to come when the new Snail Care page is up!

The Scratching Post by Levi

Cat's Need Heartworm Prevention, Too!

“MMmmmm!  I just love this chewy!”

“I’m done with mine already, can I have yours?”

“No Gordon, we each only get one chewy.  You ate yours too fast so you have to let me eat mine!”

“C’mon Levi!  Just one bite?”

“No!  You know, if you really knew what was in this chewy, you might not like it so much.”

“What do you mean?  It tastes like wonderfully chewy liver snacks and leaves me wanting more and more!”

“Gordon, it’s medicine!”

“Medicine?  Levi, don’t make this snack a bad one for me.”

“I’m serious!  Have you ever noticed how we get only one piece and it comes on the same day of every month?  Have you ever noticed how even the beast dog gets one?”

“I hadn’t noticed.  I never really paid any attention.  I just get so excited to hear the box of these treats open that I just about loose my mind.”

“Well, that’s what it is.  It’s medicine that they’ve masked with this wonderful flavor to trick us into eating it.  Otherwise, we’d have to put up a fight to get it.”

“So why do we eat it if we know it’s medicine?”

“Because it’s just too good.  And besides, deep down we know it’s good for us too.”

“What does it do for us?”

“It keeps us from getting some disease called heartworms.  I heard Mom explain to someone before.  It’s some gross parasite that lives inside of us and we can get it from being bit by a mosquito.”

“Levi, hell-o!  We live in the house!  How will a bug ever bite us?  I wouldn’t go outside for all the snacks in the world!”

“Gordon, I find that very hard to believe about you.  There’s still a possibility of mosquitoes coming into the house.  I guess the big deal about these worms is that if one of us cats does happen to get it, they can’t do much about it.”

“So, we get our little chewy treats!”

“That’s right, G.  I’m proud of you.”

“So now that I know it’s medicine but it’s good medicine, when can I have some more???”

“Next month, G.  You have to wait.  Good things come to those who wait!”

“Aw, Levi!! I want more now!  I guess if I can’t have more of these, then I’ll just have to hit the kitchen to see what else I can find; I’m starving.”

“Typical Gordon.”

bullet Think your bird needs a pal or mate in her cage?  This isn't always the best thing for all pet birds.  Paisley will fill you in on Cheep Talk!
bullet Cats come in all shapes, sizes, colors, breed and prices!  Just because a pure bred cat costs more doesn't mean that a cheaper cat, one from a shelter, might not make a good pet as well.  The boys discuss it on The Scratching Post.
