Talk by Paisley Beware of Household Dangers! “Ruby, see if you can unlock your cage door and bust me out of mine too!” “Paisley, you know we’ll be in big trouble!” “Dad and Mom will never know! We’ve got a good hour before they get home from work!” “You know what they always say: there are too many ways for us to get into trouble or hurt ourselves to be out and about without them watching us.” “Ruby! You’re such a goody goody bird!” “I’m serious, Paisley. I heard them say it! I’ve seen them fix things before we come out of our cages so we don’t get hurt.” “Oh yeah, right. Like what?” “Well, there’s that ceiling fan, for one. Then there are those cats and that dog. Oh and the windows. They swear there is glass or something in them that we can’t get through.” “Trust me, Ruby. There is. I’ve tried several times to get through them and it doesn’t happen.” “There are other things too, Paisley. Like the kitchen: that stove thing gets really hot and they also think we might drown in the sink. Have you ever noticed how they always keep the toilet lid shut too?” “Yeah, I have.” “Oh! Doorways are bad too! I know I’ve flown off the play gym while they weren’t looking and would have gotten squished by an opening door if they weren’t so careful.” “These are mostly pretty obvious things, Ruby. Can you tell me something I don’t know?” “Well, there are things that can harm us without us actually being the ones getting into it. Like cleaners that can hurt our airways. Oh and those nonstick pans give off fumes that have been known to kills birds. And don’t forget smelly candles. Those actually burn if flown over. And the smells hurt us too.” “You know what, Ruby? I bet a lot of other bird parents don’t know about some of these things. The people need to know that there are a lot of dangerous things in the house! Everyday things that you’d never think about! We need to get the word out!” “I think you just did, Paisley! Now, do you want to wait until Dad and Mom get here before coming out?” “Yes, I think I will just wait, thank you!” “I thought as much.”
